"Poem on a Painting"

4.13.2007

This week has been a nice week not having to deal with reading any poems while working on our poem project and finding a painting that we will be able to do our poem project on. At first when I heard that our project was to write a poem based on a painting I was stunned and shocked, the first thing that popped into my head was “I have no idea how to write a poem”. After looking at different poems I realized that my first step would obviously be to pick a painting that I was interested, which I have, think of a topic or theme of the painting, which I have, and then start writing down words or a story based on that theme. Those seem to be the easiest parts. What I still have to do is arrange the poem in the form I need and make sure everything still flows and is easily readable.

Overall, this project seems to be a little bit easier than the last two, the hard part will just be making it sound professional and not so much like an 8th grader threw it together. That is the part that will take the most time and effort to finish it off and polish it up.

Jessica,
I had the same thought as you(I have no idea how to write a poem) but I actually found it was kind of fun once I found a picture that interested me. I am glad to see that you are well on your way to a great poem.

You have good organizational skills. It sounds like you are taking all the right steps to write a good poem. I don't know if you've ever seen the movie "What About Bob" with the crazy guy who leans to take baby steps and ends up overcoming his obstacles. You figured out the baby steps to a great poem.
I usually feel like a five year old when I write poetry. I enjoy it though and I feel like I am letting the child in me free. It's good to be a kid at heart so if it sounds like you are an eighth grader just remember that is better than sounding like a boring old person.
Good luck!

Jessica,
I completely agree with you that it was so nice to just have to find a painting for this past week. It was nice to basically have the week off, even though I probably could have gone for the week off this week! I am also really glad to hear that you are doing so well on your poem. I hope it turns out great for you!!

Jessica,
I agree with you that the hard part of this project will be finding the perfect form for the poem. At least you have the picture and an idea of what you want to write about. By now you probably have more done since it has been awhile since your post, so hopefully it has gone better! I think that another hard part will be the interview timing and working with someone else to finish the project. Sometimes people work at different paces and have hard schedules, so hopefully that will go alright for you too! Good luck!
